It has been a really great year with the honors program and this is my second year in review to talk about what I have growth since for the past 2 years in the program. Among the events that have happened to me the past year, I really think that there are 3 experiences that really helped me to determine my future in the field of science. The first one is the research experience with Dr.Khademi at Children's hospital, the second one is the inorganic chemistry honors lab and the last one is being and SI leader for Organic Chemistry.
The lab in children's is as expected. Since I have my interest in science and a career in medical field I am truly grateful to be able to work with Dr.Khademi. She has taught me a lot of new things and showed me how excited science can be. Not only did she give me the knowledge, she also show me how to love science so that we can work everyday to develop new knowledge. She also helped me a lot with my studying since she is an M.D. Ph.D. She showed what a great career it can be to be able to work with both the patient and study the science behind diseases. I am confident to say that everything I have learned in this lab will help me to be successful in the field that I am interested in. I am also thankful for the good relationships that I have built with everyone in the lab and I hope some day I would be able to be their colleague to work and discover new things in the neurology field.
My second experience is taking the inorganic chemistry lab. Thanks to this experience, I have found my long lost flame of interest in chemistry. I have always been a fan of chemistry but to me, inorganic chemistry is something not so clear and vivid to understand therefore I decided no to be a chemist. But I really think that I was so narrow-minded after working with wonderful people in Dr.Guan lab. Since the first day we have worked together well and I can see the love for chemistry that all of us share. That is something I really like about this class because it is not a class, it is like a real lab with real scientists who were actually there to do things, not learn things. I have never contributed so much idea in a lab like this one before. I felt like everything I have learned and understood finally has a place to be used. It is such a satisfying feeling that I even considered the career in chemistry again. It is so helpful for my future because after this experience I have learned that being able to experience something that we not yet full understand is necessary before we make any decision. For me, I think that I really want to study more chemistry and use it in medical field. That's why a biochemistry degree would not be a bad option for graduate school either since I have to consider it soon.
My last experience is being an SI leader. The other two experiences teach me how to be a good student but this one teaches me how to be a good employee. I have never been in a more professional job than being an SI leader before. Being on time, being prepared before the session and a strictly defined working environment is what the learning assistant center has given me the past year. Having been put under a friendly but discipline environment really shape me to be a better employee overall. I have made several mistakes during the time I worked with the center but I am happy that I made those mistakes because they really helped me grow as a person. My co-workers are also among the brightest in this school so I learned a lot from each and everyone of them. Sharing and learning exams have never been more fun and exciting with these great students. I am truly grateful to know them and being able to work with such a great team is my honors.
Now that I have reached the end of my journey at UC. I am looking forward to finish strong and move on with my life after that. I will definitely go to graduate school to continue my education and hopefully make my dream come true. Honors program has provided me so much opportunity to grow and learn. I am truly grateful for all the helps that everyone has given me the past 2 years.
